The research on trajectory planning of parallel mechanisms is an important field in robotics technology, which involves the design of algorithms and control systems to ensure that robots can accurately move their end effectors along predetermined paths and speeds. Parallel mechanisms pose special challenges and opportunities for trajectory planning due to their unique structure, such as high rigidity and excellent dynamic performance.
Parallel mechanisms typically consist of several motor-driven linkages that support a common working platform. Unlike serial robots, the implementation of their actions relies on the coordinated motion of multiple driving components. This structure gives parallel mechanisms advantages in terms of load-bearing capacity and motion accuracy, but also brings complexity to motion planning, especially in real-time path planning and solving inverse kinematics solutions in dynamic environments.
The first problem that trajectory planning needs to solve is the inverse kinematics problem, which is how to calculate the specific motion of each driving link based on the expected position and attitude of the end effector. The inverse kinematics of parallel mechanisms is usually more complex than that of series mechanisms, and there may be multiple or no solutions. The forward kinematics problem involves determining the position and orientation of the end effector given the position of the connecting rod, which is also very challenging in some cases.
Trajectory generation involves designing the motion path of the end effector to meet specific performance requirements, such as minimizing time, energy consumption, or following certain dynamic constraints. Common trajectories include straight lines, arcs, or more complex curves, which require customized design based on the characteristics of the mechanism and task requirements. Trajectory generation methods include polynomial interpolation, spline interpolation, etc. Polynomial interpolation is achieved by constructing a polynomial function that takes specific values on a given series of control points to generate smooth trajectories. For robot applications, cubic or fifth degree polynomials are typically used as they can provide continuous velocity and acceleration trajectories. Spline interpolation, such as B-splines or Bezier splines, provides a more flexible way of trajectory generation. A spline curve is a collection of polynomial segments that smoothly transition between control points, allowing for the creation of more complex and adaptable trajectory shapes.
Dynamic programming plays an important role in trajectory planning of parallel mechanisms. This involves finding the lowest cost solution (such as time, energy consumption, or path length) under given dynamic and control constraints. This is particularly important for complex task environments. Optimization methods can be used to improve the efficiency and performance of trajectories, reduce energy consumption, or optimize other indicators such as accuracy and speed. Including genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimization (PSO), and other heuristic or metaheuristic algorithms, all of which can be used to solve nonlinear, high-dimensional trajectory optimization problems. Genetic algorithm is a global search technique that mimics the process of natural selection. It uses a set of trajectory samples (called a population) to gradually find the optimal or near optimal solution through iterative selection, crossover, and mutation operations. This method is suitable for solving nonlinear, multi peak, and other complex optimization problems. Particle swarm optimization is a population-based optimization technique, where each particle represents a potential solution and updates its position by mimicking the social behavior of bird flocks. The particles explore the solution space by tracking the best experiences of individuals and groups, making it suitable for continuous optimization problems.
Trajectory planning requires powerful software support, including algorithms for simulating, optimizing, and implementing trajectory planning. Common tools and platforms include MATLAB, ROS (Robot Operating System), and specialized robot simulation software such as V-REP, RobotStudio, and Gazebo.
The trajectory planning of parallel mechanisms is crucial in many high-precision application fields, such as aerospace, automotive manufacturing, medical surgery, and precision assembly. These applications have extremely high requirements for accuracy, response speed, and reliability, so trajectory planning research not only needs to solve theoretical problems, but also must face practical engineering challenges such as hardware limitations, environmental uncertainty, and system nonlinear response. In practical applications, the design of real-time control systems is also key to achieving efficient trajectory planning. It requires processing feedback information from sensors and adjusting execution strategies to adapt to environmental changes and the dynamic characteristics of the machine itself.
Trajectory planning is a multidisciplinary field that integrates the latest research achievements from multiple fields such as mechanical engineering, control theory, computer science, and artificial intelligence. Future development may focus on improving computational efficiency, enhancing adaptive capabilities, and improving operational flexibility. With the continuous advancement of technology, we can expect parallel mechanisms to be widely used in more high-precision and high-performance application scenarios.
